Congratulations to Janet
Higginson and Cynthia Todd, winners of the
Afimilk Young Scientist Award, at the first
North American Conference on Precision Dairy
Management.
Janet Higginson’s winning
presentation was on the
Validation of a New
Pedometry System for Behavioural Research and
Lameness Detection in Dairy Cattle.
Cynthia
Todd was the runner-up.
Her presentation was on the
Effects of Free-Access Feeding and Milk Replacer
Acidification on Calf Performance and
Development of Digestive Anatomy.
Both winners are graduate students in the
Department of Population Medicine, University of Guelph,
Guelph,
Ontario,
Canada.

The purpose of the award is to encourage
excellence in dairy research and communication
of results by young investigators.
The winner received a certificate and a
cheque for $1,500CAD. The runner-up received a
certificate and cheque for $500CAD |
Requirements
(i)
Submission of an abstract of sufficient quality to be
accepted by the conference’s scientific review committee
for either oral or poster presentation.
(ii) Attendance at the meeting and
presentation by the investigator.
Eligibility

Eligibility for the Award is restricted to the
following:
(i) Undergraduate
or Graduate students enrolled at a University or a
Post-Doctoral researcher or non-permanent Research
Associate who is less than 2 years since the
completion of his or her PhD; AND
(ii) Investigator is the first author of the paper
concerned, having made a substantial contribution to
the planning, execution, analysis and preparation of
the information presented.
Assessment
(i)
The judging panel will consist of
two
members of the scientific review committee of the
Precision Dairy 2010 Conference and an employee of
Afimilk
provided that they have not been associated with any of
the papers under consideration.
(ii) The panel will individually
assess each paper and presentation for content, clarity,
adequacy of interpretation, efficiency of answering
questions and communication skills. The evaluation form
is outlined below.
(iii) The Award may be withheld at
the panel's discretion.

Content and Quality of Submitted Paper (clarity, language,
relevance, etc.)
